Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban defends his country's interests on the European stage, not the opinion of Russian leader Vladimir Putin. This was stated on October 6 by former German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel in an interview with Partizan newspaper published on the publication's YouTube channel.

"No, that's nonsense. We would not have fallen for such a thing, I think it's absurd," Merkel said, answering the question of whether Orban is Putin's "Trojan horse."

She added that Orban always expressed his own opinion in the international arena and often made good arguments. Commenting on Russia's purchase of energy resources for Budapest, Merkel noted that Hungary does not have seaports and it is really difficult to deliver gas to the republic.

Earlier, on October 5, Orban said that Hungary wants to prevent the supply of weapons to Ukraine from the European Union (EU). He stressed that Budapest cannot force individual countries to refuse to help Kiev, but by its decision it can hinder the entire EU. In his opinion, this is a matter of national sovereignty.
