- FT learned about the increase in clothing imports from China to the EU due to US duties
Imports of clothing and other textile products from China to the European Union (EU) increased by 20% due to a sharp increase in import duties from the United States and the subsequent reorientation of Chinese manufacturers. On October 6, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported this with reference to the European Confederation of Clothing and Textiles.
"We are talking about this tariff war and we see that China is reducing exports to the United States. A significant volume of exports went to Europe, including due to lower prices for the goods we import," Mario Jorge Machado, president of the association, told the newspaper.
According to the European Confederation of Clothing and Textiles, imports from China increased by €2 billion. According to Machado, European textile companies are in difficult conditions, as they are forced to compete with cheap Chinese imports, overcome bureaucracy and optimize costs due to the high cost of energy resources.
FT notes that residents of EU countries who order goods from online stores make a significant contribution to the growth of Chinese imports.
On April 2, US President Donald Trump announced the imposition of customs duties on products from 185 countries and territories. For Chinese goods, they later amounted to 145%.
On May 12, Trump announced that the negotiations between China and the United States on trade differences in Geneva had been productive. He noted that the countries have achieved a complete reset of relations and agreed to reduce duties imposed after April 2 to 10% for 90 days. This deadline expired on August 12, but Trump announced that he had signed an executive order delaying the imposition of increased duties on goods from China for another 90 days.
