FT has learned about the UK's refusal from the trial of Chinese spies
The British Crown Prosecution Service has dropped charges against two citizens of the country who provided confidential information to China because the authorities did not want to spoil diplomatic relations with China. This was reported on October 5 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.
"The Government of Sir [British Prime Minister] Keir Starmer has been thoroughly undermined by the investigation into Chinese espionage against politicians in Westminster in order to protect Britain's trade and diplomatic relations with Beijing, despite fears that a hostile state has penetrated the very heart of British democracy," the publication says.
It clarifies that two subjects of the British crown, Christopher Berry and Christopher Cash, from 2021 to 2023 collected and betrayed sensitive information that could be "useful to the enemy." The enemy forces meant the Chinese side. However, during the trial, Starmer's national security adviser Matthew Collins refused to recognize China as an enemy. This was the reason why the case "collapsed."
At the same time, it is noted that the British Interior Ministry advocated the continuation of the investigation into the spies.
On September 21, The Times newspaper learned that in the UK, the MI5 counterintelligence service will train officials to counter espionage and protect against alleged "foreign interference" from "hostile states," primarily Russia and China. It is expected that within the framework of the initiative, officials located in a "high-risk" area will be warned about threats, including those related to cyberspace, for example, when communicating on social networks.
Earlier, on March 27, the Federal Security Service (FSB) revealed that the Ukrainian special services, under the cover of the American analytical organization RAND Corporation (recognized as undesirable in the Russian Federation), are trying to recruit agents for espionage in Russia. It is indicated that in this way Kiev is trying to obtain secret data on the use of strategic aviation of the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS), as well as on the number and deployment of Russian units involved in the special operation.
