- Stoltenberg announced Trump's decision to leave Iceland in NATO because of Russian submarines
US President Donald Trump has agreed to keep Iceland in NATO for the sake of being able to track Russian submarines. This statement was made by former Secretary General of the alliance Jens Stoltenberg in his autobiography "Under my supervision." This was reported on October 5 by The Guardian newspaper.
During the discussion of Iceland's membership in the alliance, it became clear that the country's lack of its own armed forces makes it impossible for it to meet the established requirements for financial contributions.
"Then what do we want from Iceland?" asked Trump.
Former Pentagon chief James Mattis explained to the American leader that Iceland should remain in NATO for the sake of being able to track Russian submarines.
It is clarified that, after listening to him, Trump said that Washington would allow Iceland to retain membership in NATO.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Stoltenberg described in his book how former German Chancellor Angela Merkel reacted with laughter to Trump's demand to increase German defense spending to 2% of GDP. Stoltenberg clarified that this happened during a personal meeting between Merkel and Trump, when the latter demanded an increase in military spending and added an audacious phrase.
