The US government shutdown will lead to cuts and losses for GDP
Kevin Hassett, head of the White House National Economic Council, warned that if the government shutdown continues, massive cuts and losses to GDP of $15 billion per week are possible. He said this on October 5 in an interview with CNN.
"If the president decides that the negotiations are not going anywhere, then the cuts will begin, but everyone hopes that from Monday we will have a new beginning. Democrats will see that common sense is to avoid losses for the economy," Hassett said.
He also noted that with a reasonable approach by the Democrats to budget coordination, there will be no reasons for cuts, and the White House is counting on a constructive dialogue in the Senate.
US President Donald Trump said earlier, on September 30, that he could use the shutdown period to review a number of programs and mass layoffs of staff, stressing that responsibility for the current situation lies with the position of the Democrats.
Later, on October 1, it was reported that the suspension of government work would lead to the sending of non-primary federal personnel on unpaid leave, while some employees would continue to work without pay. Experts also warned that the shutdown could weaken the dollar in the short term, especially with delays in the publication of economic data.
