In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of Monday, October 6, and what church holidays are celebrated on this day.

Folk signs for October 6, 2025

In Russia, on October 6, Iraida Day, or Iraida the Controversial, was celebrated. The holiday got its name because of the difficulties with predicting the weather in the middle of autumn. According to another version, the name is associated with the tradition of thanking the Almighty for all the good things in life. On this day, it was not customary to complain about adversity and "argue with fate," otherwise it was possible to attract new difficulties.

At the same time, the people considered it useless to guess about fate, believing that it could not be changed. In addition, our ancestors believed that any answers received during fortune-telling or divination would be controversial for interpretation. The traditional occupations of the peasants at that time were repairing stoves and heating huts before the onset of cold weather. Stoves were invited into the houses, and coal and firewood were talked into keeping the house warm all winter.

The weather signs of the day included animal sightings. If a rooster was heard crowing at night, then inclement weather was expected. If the cat washed with its left paw, it also promised bad weather. And the ducks splashing in the water foreshadowed the rains.

Other signs of the day:

  • thick fog in the morning leads to clear and dry weather;
  • Leaves have fallen from the maple tree — winter will come early;
  • there are few mushrooms in the forest — for a harsh winter;
  • mice rustle in the cellar — to the imminent cold weather;
  • high weeds in the field — there will be a lot of snow in winter;
  • A light rain is sprinkling all day — the winter will be warm.;
  • The first snow has fallen, and the real winter weather is coming soon.

What not to do on October 6th

In the old days, certain prohibitions were followed on the holiday in order to avoid misfortunes. For example, it was not recommended to tell anyone about your problems, recall past troubles and mistakes, and make fateful decisions. According to beliefs, their consequences can be unpredictable.

What else can not be done on October 6:

  • mentioning God in conversations leads to problems in personal relationships and business;
  • Praising another person, admiring their beauty, intelligence, or wealth, is how they can be jinxed.;
  • make large purchases — there may be serious holes in the budget.;
  • arguing with your spouse — the conflict in the family will drag on for a long time.;
  • make plans for the future — most likely, they will not come true;
  • Picking up objects from the ground is believed to lead to money problems.

What is the church holiday on October 6th?

On October 6, the Orthodox Church honors the memory of the Holy Martyr Iraida (Raisa) of Alexandria, who lived in the Egyptian city of Alexandria in the III–IV centuries. She came from a priest's family and chose the monastic life from the age of 12. The saint suffered for the Christian faith under Emperor Maxentius, during whose reign Christians were persecuted.

According to the hagiography, one day Iraida went to the spring for water and saw a ship with prisoners, priests and monks, chained up near the shore. The girl voluntarily joined the prisoners, and when the ship docked at the city of Antinopolis, she and other prisoners were tortured and executed.

On the same date, the feast of the Slovene (Slovene) Icon of the Mother of God is celebrated in honor of the miraculous image revealed in 1628. According to legend, in the Galich district there lived a certain peasant Tit Gavrilov, who suffered from blindness and paralysis. Once in a dream, the Virgin appeared to him and pointed to the ruined church by the Slovinka River, the place where the icon was located. The man woke up completely healthy, and when he found the image, he became a monk and asceticized at the place of acquiring the image.

Prayers on October 6th

On Iraida of Alexandria Memorial Day, believers offer prayers for strengthening faith, spiritual support and help in the fight against addiction. Prayers are also addressed to the saint in cases where a person is persecuted for his beliefs, asking for protection from unfair accusations and persecution. In front of the Slovenian Icon of the Mother of God, they pray for deliverance from mental and physical suffering, including paralysis, blindness and diseases of the central nervous system.
