After the holiday season, the number of infections with the Coxsackie virus has increased in Russia, infectious disease specialist Vera Serezhina told Izvestia. According to her, children and teenagers are most often sick.

"Coxsackie is an enterovirus with multiple serotypes, which is why immunity does not form, and re—infection is possible. The infection is actively spreading in resorts, and in September it returns to the cities, creating outbreaks in schools and kindergartens," Serezhina explained.

According to her, the danger of the disease lies in the fact that it can occur in different ways. Adults often have a mild form: fever, malaise, sometimes rash and intestinal disorders. In children, the course of the disease is usually more severe.

"The virus can cause not only intestinal symptoms, such as diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration, but also affect the nervous system and the heart. Possible complications are serous meningitis, encephalitis, and myocarditis. That is why doctors are always wary of enterovirus infections in children's groups," the doctor noted.

The specialist called for the prevention of the disease: regular hand washing, the use of clean water and an immediate examination at the first signs of the disease. For more information about the Coxsackie virus and protective measures, see the Izvestia article.
