- The Armenian Foreign Ministry commented on the presence of the Russian military in the republic.
The initialing of the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan does not affect the issue of the presence of the Russian military in the republic. This was stated on October 4 by the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, Ani Badalyan, in an interview with PassBlue, the "Armenpress" agency reports.
According to Badalyan, the issue of the deployment of the Russian military is regulated by separate bilateral agreements with Moscow and has nothing to do with the document signed in Washington on August 8.
"This is regulated by a bilateral agreement with Russia, so it does not apply to the peace agreement we initialed," the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman stressed.
On September 30, 1992, Armenia and Russia signed an agreement on the status of Russian border troops stationed on the territory of the republic. According to the agreement, Russian border guards serve on the borders of Armenia with Turkey and Iran, guarding 345 and 45 km long sections, respectively.
Since the summer of 2024, the Russian military has gradually withdrawn from checkpoints, retaining the functions of protecting the state border without participating in border control.
Earlier, on September 11, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin said that relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan are gradually normalizing. He noted that both countries continue to participate in the work of the Commonwealth of Independent States, emphasizing the voluntary nature of membership in the association. Pankin expressed hope that the settlement process between Baku and Yerevan will become a positive factor for their further cooperation within the CIS.
