Protests in Tbilisi
On the afternoon of October 4, hundreds of cars moved towards Tbilisi to take part in protests over the parliamentary elections in Georgia. The protesters completely blocked traffic on Tbilisi's central Rustaveli Avenue and Freedom Square.
Later, protests against the ruling Georgian Dream party started in Freedom Square. The student march began at Tbilisi State University. The protesters headed to Freedom Square through Peter Melikishvili and Shota Rustaveli Avenues. The demonstration was joined by immigrants who arrived in Georgia for today's rally. In the footage from social networks, you can see protesters not only with national, but also with American flags.
Protesters in Tbilisi also broke into the courtyard of the Georgian president's residence, breaking through iron barriers. The special forces used pepper spray against them. The Georgian Interior Ministry, in turn, stressed that the rally in Tbilisi went beyond the law and called on the protesters to comply with the demands of law enforcement officers.
Parliamentary election results
Nine candidates are competing for the post of mayor of Tbilisi, including the current mayor, Kakha Kaladze, a representative of the ruling Georgian Dream party, who has held this position since 2017. Kaladze is gaining 71.5% in the municipal elections in Georgia after counting 98% of the votes, according to the CEC. The second place is taken by the candidate from the two opposition parties "Lelo" and "For Georgia" Irakli Kupradze with 12.5% of the votes.
According to the CEC, the ruling Georgian Dream party won the parliamentary elections in all 64 municipalities of Georgia.
