Grossi warned about the threat of nuclear safety at Zaporizhia NPP
Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said on October 3 that the 10th shutdown of the external power supply to the Zaporizhia NPP poses a serious threat to nuclear safety.
"This is (external power outage. — Ed.) a very serious situation for nuclear safety. I call on both sides (Ukraine and Russia. — Ed.) to do everything necessary to ensure that it does not worsen. This is a matter of political will, not the technical capabilities that are present," he is quoted as saying on the IAEA website.
He added that as long as the backup diesel generators at the plant are working properly and without failures, there will be enough fuel reserves.
"However, this is an unprecedented situation that must be resolved without delay. This is a nuclear safety issue, and it is in everyone's interest to resolve it," he concluded.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Grossi was discussing with Russia and Ukraine detailed proposals for restoring external power to the NPP. He noted that both sides declare their readiness to carry out the necessary repairs on both sides of the front line.
