- The Greek Foreign Ministry made a demarche to Israel over the detention of flotilla participants
The Greek Foreign Ministry has sent an official protest to the Israeli Ambassador after the detention of 27 citizens of the country who took part in the Global Sumud Flotilla. This was announced on October 3 on the agency's website.
The Greek delegation led by the Ambassador visited the detention center in Tel Aviv to provide assistance to the detainees.
"The Greek citizens are in good health, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, together with the embassy, are monitoring that the procedures for their repatriation are completed as soon as possible," the statement said.
By order of Foreign Minister Yorgos Gerapetris, a written demarche was handed over to the Israeli side. Athens demanded respect for the rights of citizens, including a member of the Greek parliament who was among the detainees.
"Human dignity is inviolable and fundamental and is the primary responsibility of every state," the ministry stressed.
Earlier in the day, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Onju Keceli said that a number of countries had asked Ankara to evacuate their citizens from Israel after the detention of the Global Sumud Flotilla. According to him, about 50 Turkish citizens are among the detainees. Turkey plans to send a plane to return them in the coming days.
