- In the USA, sailors found a treasure worth $1 million on a ship that sank 300 years ago.
American sailors have discovered a valuable treasure worth $1 million aboard a ship that sank more than 300 years ago. This was reported on October 3 by the New York Post (NYP).
It is noted that the team of Captain Levin Shavers discovered the valuables during search operations off the coast of Florida. The artifacts have been on the seabed for more than 300 years as part of the cargo of the Spanish flotilla, which included 11 ships.
According to the newspaper, the ships were transporting wealth from the New World to Spain when they were caught in a devastating hurricane in July 1715. As a result of the shipwreck, tons of precious metals and jewelry went to the bottom, the cost of which at that time was about $ 400 million in modern equivalent.
Among the items found are 1,000 silver reales and five rare gold escudos minted in Mexican, Peruvian and Bolivian colonies. The researchers were struck by the excellent preservation of the coins, which clearly show the dates and stamps of the mints.
It is specified that all the artifacts were transferred to specialists for conservation, and after the restoration is completed, they will be placed in museums in the state of Florida.
Earlier, on June 11, researchers discovered treasures off the coast of Colombia that were transported aboard the ship San Jose, which sank 300 years ago. The current value of the valuables can reach $17 billion, potentially making them the largest known underwater treasure trove.
