- Axios announced the likelihood of closure of about 15,000 churches in the United States in 2025
In the United States, due to changes in the religious life of the population, 15,000 Christian churches may close in 2025, the Axios portal indicated on October 3.
"An unprecedented 15,000 churches in the United States may close this year, which is much more than the expected number of openings," the publication says.
The portal notes that there is a decline in traditional churches in the country against the background of the fact that a record number of Americans — 29% — do not identify with any religion. 62% of US residents consider themselves Christians, which is lower than in 2007 — 78%.
"These contradictory trends have shaken the country's long-standing religious foundation: fewer and fewer communities are forming around local churches," writes Axios.
According to experts, the record number of Christian church closures is also linked to difficulties in retaining permanent pastors. The National Council of Churches estimates that 100,000 churches of all faiths will close in the United States over the next few years. This is about a quarter of the 350-400 thousand churches opened in the country today.
Prior to that, on May 10, Axios noted that Christianity was beginning to return to the United States and other Western countries, and young people were at the forefront of these changes. It was noted that members of generation Z, especially men, are more likely to attend weekly religious services than millennials and even some members of generation X. The publication says that it is young people who "lead the religious revival of America."
