Merkel criticized Merz for choosing Macron as speaker on German Unity Day
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel criticized the government of Chancellor Friedrich Merz for choosing French President Emmanuel Macron as an invited speaker on German Unity Day. She announced this on October 3 in an interview with the ZDFheute Nachrichten (ZDF) TV channel, which was broadcast on the YouTube channel.
"With all due respect to President Macron, someone from Eastern Europe or East Germany could be chosen as an invited speaker to celebrate the 35th anniversary of German unity, because Eastern Europeans have also made a huge contribution to its achievement," Merkel said.
On October 3, Germany celebrates a national holiday — German Unity Day. On September 12, 1990, Germany, the GDR, the USSR, the USA, France and the United Kingdom signed a final settlement agreement with respect to Germany. On October 3, 1990, it officially became a single state with a common Constitution, and the German Democratic Republic (GDR) ceased to exist.
Last year, thousands of people gathered in Berlin on German Unity Day for the Star March for Peace. About 1,000 police officers monitored the order at the demonstration.
