Dmitry Medkov, Russia's most famous illegally convicted man, has died.

Dmitry Medkov died in the village of Kitaevskoye in the Stavropol Territory. He was convicted of murdering his 14-year-old sister, a crime he did not commit. This is reported by Komsomolskaya Pravda.

As indicated in the article, Medkov is one of the most famous wrongfully convicted persons in Russia. In 2003, as a student at Alexander College, he was arrested on suspicion of murdering his sister, who had disappeared eight months earlier. His friend testified against Medkov. The young man first confessed to the crime and described its details, but later recanted his testimony. Experts declared him insane, and the court ordered compulsory medical treatment.
