- The NYT learned about the US Senate's demand to justify strikes against targets in the Caribbean Sea
In the United States, senators of both parties demanded that the Pentagon provide a more convincing justification for launching strikes against drug-carrying vessels in the Caribbean. This was reported on October 2 by The New York Times (NYT), citing sources.
"Senators from both sides at a closed meeting demanded that the Pentagon's chief lawyer provide a more compelling legal explanation for the attacks on alleged Latin American drug traffickers in the Caribbean," the publication says.
It is clarified that earlier, on October 1, at a secret briefing of the Senate Armed Services Committee, the Pentagon's chief legal adviser, Earl Matthews, outlined in detail the legal basis for the strikes in the Caribbean Sea, which were carried out on the orders of US President Donald Trump.
Earlier in the day, the newspaper also reported that Trump had decided that the United States was involved in an armed conflict with drug cartels, and therefore perceived members of such groups as combatants. A corresponding notification has been sent to several congressional committees. This adds new details to the justification for the US attacks on ships in the Caribbean that allegedly transported drugs. It follows from this that all 17 dead crew members of the ships were allegedly killed "legally," the newspaper notes.
On September 15, Trump announced that the US military had attacked groups that Washington calls drug cartels and "narco-terrorists" from Venezuela. According to the American leader, as a result of the operation, three militants were killed and "none of the American servicemen were injured."
