Sobyanin announced the opening of the monument to the "Metro Builders of Russia"
A monument to the "Metro Builders of Russia" was unveiled on Sokolnicheskaya Square in the Moscow Metro Square. This was announced by Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin on Thursday, October 2.
He recalled that it was here that construction of the first metro line from Sokolniki to Park Kultury and Smolenskaya Square began in December 1931. According to Sobyanin, the monument commemorates the feat of the first metro builders, who, with only a pickaxe and a shovel, managed to build the line in record time and open it in May 1935, the Moscow City News agency reports.
The monument depicts the meeting of the first metro builder with a contemporary against the background of the Mosmetrostroy emblem, writes Moscow 24. According to the idea of the sculptor Vildar Yusupov, the figures are surrounded by petals, symbolizing a tunneling combine. According to the mayor, the composition is made of bronze and granite, materials traditionally used in the design of the Moscow metro, NSN notes.
