The annual vaccination of reindeer against anthrax has been completed in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District. Veterinarians have vaccinated more than 522,000 animals, the press service of the regional authorities reports.

The events started in February and ended at the end of September. The leader in livestock coverage was the Tazovsky district, where 180,000 treatments were carried out. The main number of deer is concentrated in private farms due to the peculiarities of the region.

More than 20 vaccination teams were involved in the work. It consists of veterinary specialists and seasonal workers representing the indigenous peoples of the North. Their main task is to assist in installing portable corrals, fixing and tagging deer, as well as interacting with reindeer herders on the ground.

"If we evaluate what kind of work we are doing in reindeer husbandry, no one is doing such volumes in Russia. We have a large livestock," said Evgenia Popova, head of the district veterinary service, quoted by the news agency " <url>".

Over the past seven years, due to the increase in the number of livestock, the vaccination period had to be extended: now vaccinations are carried out not only in summer, but also in spring. During this time, it is possible to cover up to 200 thousand individuals. Work is temporarily suspended in April so as not to interfere with the mass calving, and resumes in June.

Tagging is also carried out in parallel with vaccination: in 2025, 104 thousand deer received identification tags. More than 47,000 samples were also selected and tested for brucellosis.

Within the framework of the program, veterinary care is provided not only to deer, but also to reindeer herders' dogs. Pets are registered, vaccinated and treated for parasites. In 2025, 2,842 dogs and 17 cats received their chips.

Earlier it was reported that the Nenets Autonomous District is preparing to launch a project to create a workshop for the deep processing of by-products of reindeer husbandry. Collagen, a valuable raw material for pharmaceuticals and industry, will be produced from reindeer bones, skins and horns.
