DM reported on mosquitoes capable of spreading deadly diseases in the UK
Scientists have issued an urgent warning after mosquitoes capable of spreading three deadly tropical diseases were first discovered in the UK. This was reported by the Daily Mail on October 1.
"The UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) has discovered eggs belonging to an Egyptian mosquito (Aedes aegypti) and a tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus). These species are capable of carrying diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses," the article says.
However, according to the newspaper, everything indicates that neither the tiger nor the Egyptian mosquito have taken root in the UK. At the same time, experts are concerned that climate change and milder winters mean that there is "a risk of these invasive species entering the UK."
The Egyptian mosquito and the tiger mosquito used to be common only in the subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. But, according to the Daily Mail, the disease-carrying pests have already spread beyond their "native territory": tiger mosquitoes have settled in Southern and Central Europe.
Several mosquitoes may have been imported by car or cargo flights from countries such as Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
On September 11, Bloomberg reported that Candidozyma auris (C. auris), a fungus that is difficult to treat and especially dangerous for debilitated patients, is rapidly spreading in European medical institutions. Experts note that early detection, isolation of patients and disinfection of equipment help limit the spread.
