Sales of new cars in Russia fell by a quarter year-on-year

By the end of January-September 2025, 1.01 million new cars (up to three years old) were sold in Russia, which is 25% less than in the same period last year (1.35 million units). The market for new cars of domestic production exceeded 556 thousand units (-5% YoY). This is stated in the message of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, which was received by Izvestia on October 2.

The market volume in the segment of passenger cars was 890.3 thousand units (-22%), in the segment of light commercial vehicles — 75.5 thousand units (-21%), trucks — 40.3 thousand units (-56%), buses — 8.1 thousand units (-45%).

At the same time, a total of 136.5 thousand new cars were sold in September. This is 1% more than the results of the previous month and 33% more than the results of June, one of the "lowest" months of the current year. Sales of passenger cars in September decreased by 18% year-on-year and amounted to 122.1 thousand units.

The share of Russian equipment in January – September increased by 11 percentage points compared to the same period last year. In September, sales volumes of cars produced in the Russian Federation amounted to 73.6 thousand units, which is almost 5% more than in September 2024. 62.9 thousand imported cars were sold during the month, which is 38% less than in September last year.

In addition, the market for new electric vehicles in nine months amounted to 8,657 units (-43% year-on-year), and the share of those manufactured in the Russian Federation reached 30% (last year it was 19%).

On September 30, it was reported that, as Anton Alikhanov, the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, said, passenger cars of more than 20 brands are currently being produced in Russia, and about 50 models have been put on the assembly line.

Also on that day, it became known that from January to August 2025, 424.7 thousand new passenger cars of 64 Chinese brands were registered in Russia. 34 brands supply their products officially, have dealer networks in Russia and guarantee cars. The cars of the remaining 30 brands were imported into the country under the alternative import scheme.
