FT: Ukraine intercepted at least three Russian missiles in September
Russia has improved ballistic missiles, which has dramatically reduced the effectiveness of American Patriot systems in Ukraine. This was reported on October 2 by the Financial Times newspaper.
"In the summer, the percentage of interceptions of ballistic missiles by Ukraine increased to 37% in August, but in September it fell to 6%, despite fewer launches," the article says.
Iskander-M and Dagger are now able to change their trajectory at the final stage, going into a steep dive or performing maneuvers that "confuse" interceptors, the authors of the article emphasize.
Western experts note that the changes primarily concern the software: the missile can perform a maneuver immediately before hitting the target.
Iskander-M can maneuver quite aggressively at the final stage <...> A steeper final trajectory is something that can be programmed into a rocket," said Fabian Hoffman, a researcher at the University of Oslo.
Amid delays in the supply of new batteries and damage to already deployed Patriot complexes, the Ukrainian air defense system has lost some of its multilevel protection.
On September 27, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Ukraine would receive two Patriot air defense systems from Israel. In addition, Zelensky announced Kiev's readiness for separate agreements on certain types of weapons, including long-range weapons, in addition to the current agreement with the United States. Earlier, on September 11, Zelensky and the special representative of the American leader Donald Trump, Keith Kellogg, discussed the supply of Patriot systems to Ukraine.
