Anti-Russian sanctions and measures taken within their framework, such as asset freezes, are based on the internal regulations of the European Union (EU), and not on international conventions, which creates legal problems. French lawyer Alain Duflo told Izvestia about this on October 2.

"With the sanctions, we see that it is the EU that is the first to violate European rights, such as the right to a fair trial, the right to respect for private property, and the right to an effective appeal. In the sanctions, in the form in which they are presented — in 18 packages of sanctions — none of the fundamental rights were respected," he said.

According to Duflo, the main victims of such restrictions are not Russian companies, but European enterprises and citizens. He also noted that Russia is a very important and large market. Due to the restrictions, many French firms have lost profits and their turnover has decreased.

"Companies were forced to lay off employees and close production sites just because the Russian market was closed to them. Not because Russia wanted it, but because their own countries — France and the EU — banned these enterprises from operating in Russia," the lawyer pointed out.

A day earlier, Bloomberg learned that the G7 countries were close to concluding an agreement on a "significant tightening" of sanctions against Russia due to the conflict in Ukraine. It is specified that we are talking about sanctions in the fields of energy, finance and the military industry.

Earlier, on September 19, the European Commission (EC) proposed to impose sanctions on 45 Russian and foreign companies as part of the 19th package of anti-Russian sanctions. It was reported that the new sanctions package will include a ban on investments in Russian special economic zones (SEZs) related to the Ukrainian conflict.
