Fraudsters began to deceive Russians under the guise of military enlistment offices
Fraud cases have become more frequent in Russia, when intruders deceive citizens under the guise of military enlistment offices. Vadim Vinogradov, Dean of the HSE Faculty of Law, announced this on Wednesday, October 1.
He noted that Russians are being told by phone about urgent verification or updating of information, allegedly in connection with the launch of a Unified register of electronic summonses. During the conversation, the interviewee is asked to name the SMS code that is supposedly required to verify identity. However, this code is used to log into your personal account on the Gosuslugi portal, he stressed.
"Young citizens, including students, who receive calls from people posing as university staff or dean's offices, are particularly vulnerable under this scheme. In such cases, the scammers claim to be acting on behalf of the military enlistment office and offer to undergo a "background check" due to technical failures," the professor said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
The expert recalled that attempts by unknown persons to obtain a confirmation code by phone is a clear sign of fraud.
"Additional security tools should be used, including two—factor authentication, connection of telecom operators' services to filter suspicious calls, as well as regular verification of activity in personal accounts on government platforms," Vinogradov concluded.
Earlier that day, the Department for the organization of the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Russian Interior Ministry reported that fraudsters in Russia began to use a new scheme to mislead citizens by offering to "confirm the passport number by voice," RT reports.
The Interior Ministry stressed that the procedure for "confirming the passport number by voice" does not exist, and any attempts to use such a method to gain access to significant data or resources are fraud, IA Regnum reports.
Earlier, Russians were warned about fraud with pseudo-couriers. The attackers call people and announce the delivery of the already paid goods, after which they ask them to confirm receipt, Moscow 24 reports.
