Russian oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline are of paramount importance for Hungary, and Budapest has no alternative to fuel from the Russian Federation. This was announced on October 1 by Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Before the informal summit of the European Union (EU) in Copenhagen, journalists asked the politician to tell whether the United States had demanded that Hungary stop buying Russian oil.

"First of all, no one asked me to do this. Hungary is a sovereign country, and we make our own decisions regarding energy suppliers. Secondly, we have no other options. There is an additional pipeline from Croatia, but it is not as important as the oil pipeline from Russia," the politician said. The broadcast was carried out on the website of the European Commission (EC).

Orban explained that Hungary has no access to the sea, and the country is not able to change its geographical location.

Earlier, on September 26, Orban, during a telephone conversation with American leader Donald Trump, said that the Hungarian economy would "be on its knees" if Budapest refused Russian energy supplies. He added that abandoning Russian energy resources would be a disaster for Hungary. In this regard, Budapest will independently make decisions regarding oil imports from the Russian Federation, the politician stressed. The day before, Trump said he understood the difficulty of completely abandoning Russian oil for Hungary and Slovakia.
