The expert named the reasons to change schools a year before the Unified State Exam
The decision to transfer to another school in grades 10-11 is stressful for the family and a risk for the child. But a year before the exams, changing an educational institution can be a reasonable step if the current environment does not give the desired result and there is not much time left to fix something. On October 5, Olesya Mayerova, head of the educational department of the USE Center private school, called Izvestia a situation where changing institutions is a rational decision.
"The first and most common reason is the discrepancy between the educational trajectory and the target university. A child needs, for example, specialized mathematics and physics with deepening, but there is no such profile in school or there are clearly not enough hours in key subjects. The topics are covered selectively or superficially, and the set of subjects cannot be changed. In such a situation, preparation for the required subjects at the Unified State Exam level will be low," the expert said.
Maerova cited overcrowding and attention deficit as the second good reason for changing schools. After the 9th grade, some students go to colleges and technical schools, so the 10th grades are often combined into one or two. As a result, the occupancy rate is increasing, and the teacher's attention is decreasing for each high school student.
She explained that in such conditions, homework can be checked selectively, typical errors are analyzed on a case-by-case basis, and there is simply no time to pull up laggards separately. This is critical for preparing for the Unified State Exam. Without regular comments on specific errors and individual recommendations, progress stops.
The third factor is poor work with the USE format. The program may be informative, but it does not prepare for the actual exam procedures. The signs of the problem are obvious: there are no regular trial work on official CMMs, they do not analyze the verification criteria, they do not teach how to formalize responses and fill out forms, and they do not work out the appeal algorithm. As a result, the student knows the topic, but does not know how to show knowledge within the framework of the verification procedures, the head of the academic department emphasized.
"The school does not publish the average scores of graduates on the Unified State Exam, there is no calendar of tests, they do not give feedback on checks and specific recommendations on what to fix and how. As a result, neither the parents nor the student see the current gaps in training and do not understand what result they can really achieve by May," added Mayerova.
Also, an unsafe or unfavorable school environment, conflicts with classmates or teachers, constant organizational problems can disrupt the regime and motivation of students, despite academic success. In such cases, changing schools helps to maintain mental health and return to productive education.
To minimize stress during the transition, the expert recommended changing institutions at the beginning of the school year or at the turn of the quarter. It is important to agree in advance with the new school on a plan for the first 6-8 weeks and clearly discuss the necessary steps to prepare for the Unified State Exam. Regular trial work and feedback from the device help to adapt and quickly return to the working rhythm.
Ekaterina Morozova, a pediatrician at JSC "Medicine" (Academician Roitberg Clinic), Candidate of Medical Sciences, warned on September 27 about the danger of chronic fatigue among schoolchildren. According to her, the modern school curriculum places high demands on children: a long school day, homework, additional classes, study groups, preparation for the Unified State Exam, OGE, USE. Students in grades 5-9 spend up to six to seven hours a day at their desks, and taking into account homework, the total workload reaches 10-12 hours. Sleep disorders and psychoemotional stress are key risk factors.
