Since the sailors and the captain of the tanker Boracay, which was arrested off the coast of France, presumably have Russian passports, according to international law they can contact the diplomatic representatives of the Russian Federation, as well as receive legal assistance. On October 1, American political scientist Bruce Marks told Izvestia about this.

"It is obvious that international law obliges to allow Russian diplomats if they (the tanker's crew. — Ed.) Russians, communicate with them. Besides, if they need lawyers, they should be provided with lawyers," he said.

According to the political scientist, the world should not support France if it refuses to allow sailors to communicate with diplomatic representatives of their country and lawyers.

Marx also recalled the sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom, which set a certain price ceiling for a barrel of Russian oil. At the same time, he expressed the opinion that countries that have not joined the sanctions should have the right to trade freely with Russia.

"Russia's position is that they can sell it (oil. — Ed.) on the market. The European Union, the United Kingdom or the United States should not interfere in their relations with China, India or other buyers," the political scientist said.

On September 30, the French Navy detained the Benin-flagged oil tanker Boracay, which allegedly transported Russian oil in circumvention of sanctions. An investigation was launched into the vessel because the crew allegedly failed to provide evidence of the vessel's nationality and "failed to comply with orders."

As Vasily Koltashov, head of the Center for Political and Economic Studies, told Izvestia, the provocations of Western countries against tankers allegedly transporting Russian oil may indicate the desire of these states to fix their own economic problems at the expense of other people's resources.

Vladimir Rudometkin, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Transport, also noted that the wording in which the event is reported in Ukrainian and pro-Ukrainian publications distorts reality and creates tension around the situation. At the same time, the customers of such actions were not named, however, according to Rudometkin, their motivation is obvious.

According to American political analyst James Jatras, the detention of the Boracay oil tanker in France is an attempt by the authorities of this country to shift the attention of citizens from domestic problems to Russia. The expert noted that this is not only about France, but also about the UK. At the same time, he added, this will soon become relevant for Germany.
