The doctor talked about the benefits and harms of intermittent fasting
Intermittent fasting is a great tool to support a figure, slow down aging and preserve youth. Now this type of food is as popular as possible, because its health benefits are scientifically proven. However, it is important to understand that there is not and cannot be a universal nutrition method for everyone. Ekaterina Ladygina, a general practitioner and XFIT specialist, told Izvestia about this on October 1.
The expert noted that intermittent fasting may not be suitable for everyone, and this is due to genetics and the way of life that a person has overcome.
"For many people, especially women 40+, the interval type of nutrition will be a great way to keep weight off (especially when reducing daily calories by 15-30%)," explained Ladygina.
According to the therapist, for such people, intermittent fasting will reduce puffiness and fat mass while maintaining muscle tissue. And intermittent fasting with an increase in the percentage of healthy fats in the diet can prevent diabetes and insulin resistance.
This type of diet, according to the expert, also helps to correct the functioning of the cardiovascular system and prevent hypertension and hypercholesterolemia.
Despite all the benefits of intermittent fasting, there are people to whom it can only harm.
"If a person has the Gilbert's syndrome genotype, his body is not born to starve. His genetics are against it. Hence, patients may have headaches, dizziness, decreased concentration, memory, and strength," the specialist explained.
Also, fasting is not suitable for people with diseases of the hepatobiliary system, removed gallbladder and stomach diseases. In the presence of such diseases during intermittent fasting, deterioration of well-being, increased symptoms of the disease, heartburn and much more are possible.
Often during this type of hunger, the menstrual cycle in women and the production of the hormone testosterone in men are disrupted.
When a person abruptly begins intermittent fasting, deficiency states are possible caused by severe hunger, a lack of cholesterol in food, which are reinforced by an imbalance in the consumption of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Therefore, the doctor recommended that you take a responsible approach to making your diet.
"Otherwise, cravings for sweets and breakdowns cannot be avoided, which will contribute to dissatisfaction with oneself and mental health problems," Ladygina stressed.
The specialist also advised to consult a doctor when making a diet. She suggested that various vitamins may need to be subsidized for more comfortable and harmless intermittent fasting.
Earlier, on September 23, Hassan Dahti, a nutritionist from Massachusetts General Hospital, spoke about the relationship between breakfast time and the risk of premature death. According to the results of his research, brunch may be associated with poor health and an increased risk of premature death.
