The US Department of War has announced its intention to reduce the military mission in Iraq due to the desire for security partnership between the countries. This was reported by the Reuters news agency on September 30.

According to the Pentagon, the United States is seeking to "move to a security partnership with Iraq," and the reduction in mission "reflects successes in the fight against ISIS" (an organization banned in Russia).

Earlier, on August 24, the US authorities decided to withdraw their troops from the Ain al-Asad and Victoria military bases in Iraq, as well as accelerate the process of withdrawing forces from the country.

Earlier, on August 22, the first US military personnel left the largest Ain al-Asad base in Anbar province in western Iraq as part of the phased withdrawal of troops from the international anti-terrorist coalition. The Iraqi Shafaq news agency clarified that the Ain al-Asad base will be permanently closed on September 15.

In September 2024, the United States and Iraq signed an agreement on the withdrawal from the country of the forces of the international coalition led by the United States involved in the fight against the Islamic State (IS, ISIL, a terrorist organization banned in Russia). According to the American media, according to this plan, part of the troops should leave Iraq by September 2025, and the rest by the end of 2026.
