The United States called for "closing the doors" to NATO for new members
American analysts have called on the administration of US President Donald Trump to begin negotiations on ending NATO's open-door policy in order to prevent the expansion of the alliance. This is stated in an article published on September 30 by Foreign Affairs magazine.
"Despite the fact that the United States is one of the 32 NATO members, it covers 16% of NATO's annual budget and takes on most of the operational and logistical burden of ensuring Europe's security. Meanwhile, the EU has long used tariff and non—tariff barriers to restrict access to US agricultural and industrial products," the article says.
Analysts are calling for NATO to remain in Europe and the North Atlantic. The United States needs to start negotiations with its European allies on closing the alliance to new countries and demanding more responsibility from Europe for its own defense. The US military contingent in NATO countries should also be significantly reduced.
In the future, the United States should focus on strengthening domestic security and developing transatlantic ties through technological and economic cooperation.
Earlier, on September 27, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that NATO countries were threatening not only Russia and China, but were also trying to take the whole of Eurasia into a "military ring." He also added that more and more countries and regions are being involved in "confrontational schemes." According to the minister, NATO is already closely located in Europe and penetrates into the Pacific Ocean, the South China Sea, and the Taiwan Strait, "undermining the universal mechanisms" of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and creating "threats not only to China and Russia, but also to other countries located in the region."
