He was born in Kiev in 1936, graduated from the Medical Institute and the Kiev State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages. In 1966, he became a member of the board of the USSR Writers' Union.

Later, in 1986, he was appointed editor-in-chief of Ogonyok magazine. In two years under his leadership, the circulation of the publication has grown from 1.5 million to 4.5 million copies.
