European officials and the military are discussing the possibility of deploying air defense systems and creating a no-fly zone over western Ukraine with the prospect of extending this zone to Kiev. This was reported on September 30 by The Telegraph newspaper.

"One of the options proposed by a group of senior Western politicians and military personnel is to create an air defense shield over western Ukraine to repel attacks from Russian missiles and drones," the publication says.

The publication also notes that in the future such technology could be expanded to Kiev, turning the zone into a de facto no-fly zone. It clarifies that European leaders consider this proposal as a way to demonstrate Europe's determination to counter threats and willingness to bear certain risks. The discussion of this issue, along with other initiatives, will take place at the upcoming informal meeting in Copenhagen.

On April 30, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu said that Western military units, if deployed in Ukraine, would become legitimate targets for the Russian Armed Forces. According to him, such actions will indicate preparations for the occupation of the western part of Ukraine by European countries.
