The initiative to make December 31 a permanent day off in Russia is a good one. Svetlana Bessarab, a member of the State Duma Committee on Labor, Social Policy and Veterans' Affairs, expressed this opinion on Tuesday, September 30.

She recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously supported the view that it was time to make December 31 a day off.

"So far, the government is regulating this issue, namely, the provision of a day off on December 31, by redistributing other days that fall on weekends. That is, if 14 of the public holidays included in the production calendar fall on a weekend, then they are postponed, and December 31 always becomes one of these days," the parliamentarian said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

According to Bessarab, if the norm were fixed, it would be logical and correct, and people could make some plans for December 31.

Earlier, on September 24, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin approved a decree defining the order of holidays and weekends for 2026. According to him, the New Year's weekend will last 12 days — from December 31, 2025 to January 11, 2026 inclusive, the Moscow City News Agency reports.

Since next year, January 3 and 4 fell on Saturday and Sunday, which are already considered non-working days, they were postponed to Friday, January 9, and Thursday, December 31, 2025, clarifies 360.ru .
