- The political scientist assessed the relations between the United States and Central Asian countries
US President Donald Trump is focused on flashy gestures and high-profile deals, while he has problems with a long-term strategy. Andrey Grozin, head of the Central Asia Department at the Institute of CIS Countries, told Izvestia about this on October 1, commenting on Washington's contracts with Astana and Tashkent.
"It is important for Trump to constantly demonstrate the success of his foreign policy course. The current deals solve this problem: they show American voters that the president has "bent" the next foreign leaders, squeezed money out of them, and created jobs. At the same time, Washington does not have any stable strategy for Central Asia. The United States, of course, wants to oust Russia and China, they have never given up on this task, but with specific goals and tools of the problem," he explained.
Earlier on September 23, Trump announced that the Uzbek side had signed an agreement with Boeing Corporation to purchase 22 long-range 787 Dreamliner aircraft worth more than $8 billion. It is noted that the deal will create 35,000 new jobs, and the delivery of airliners will begin in 2031.
On September 22, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Latnick announced that the United States and Kazakhstan had agreed on a $4 billion locomotive deal. The official stressed that the agreement would be an example of the use of American innovative technologies, as well as support jobs in Texas and Pennsylvania.
