Working with an atypical layout opens up unique opportunities to create an interesting and functional interior. On October 5, Natalia Vedenova, art director of the Dyatkovo Design furniture brand, told Izvestia about how design techniques can be used to change the geometry of a room.

"Template solutions often highlight the disadvantages of space. Take, for example, the stereotype that all furniture must be placed strictly around the perimeter. This outdated approach, supposedly designed to free up the center of the room, actually makes the interior static and lifeless. Instead, create functional islands — for example, group a sofa and armchairs around a coffee table, slightly moving them away from the walls," said the expert.

In addition, according to her, it is important to take into account natural light: furniture away from windows loses its functionality, and dark corners reduce comfort. When planning the arrangement, it is necessary to provide for the location of sockets for floor lamps and sconces, so as not to use long extension cords.

Vedenova emphasized that the sloping walls are successfully designed with the help of an "island" of symmetry, when the fireplace or console occupies the center of the composition, and the furniture is positioned equally on both sides. Oversized furniture highlights straight walls better, and the bevel can be used for custom-made storage systems. Placing mirrors in difficult areas creates a depth effect and visually evens out the space.

Bay windows are played out according to the shape of the ledge: rectangular — with a rectangular table, oval — with a corresponding dining group, triangular — with a sofa along a straight wall. The main rule is not to block the windows: a low back of a sofa or armchair and a light console will allow light to freely enter the room.

"When protruding corners appear in a room, the so—called moustaches, many see this as a problem that violates perfect symmetry. In the bedroom, it is recommended to soften the geometry — smooth, rounded furniture is especially appropriate here," said the specialist.

In the kitchen, the ledge can be used for storage: deep — a full—fledged area with shelves, shallow - cabinets with a combined countertop. Finishing to match the walls will help visually smooth out the corner.

As for elongated narrow rooms, Vedenova added, they benefit from clear zoning with the help of light furniture — shelving without a back wall, low chests of drawers or elegant partitions. It is better to choose all objects of approximately the same width for a harmonious rhythm. Multifunctional furniture with drawers and hidden storage allows you to save space and keep order.

"For complex layouts, custom-made furniture according to individual parameters is recommended. It will help you adjust the geometry and make the most of all the possibilities of space. Remember that with proper interior planning, even its shortcomings can be turned into advantages," the expert concluded.

On August 13, Alexey Orekhov, an interior decoration expert and CEO of NATEK, spoke about common repair mistakes that can cause significant inconvenience in everyday life. According to him, tinted mirrors make it difficult to fix your hair or check your appearance before leaving home. Instead of a functional element of the interior, it turns out to be an object that interferes with habitual actions.
