The European Union (EU) is facing a power struggle between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This was reported by Bloomberg on September 30.

"Friedrich Merz wants Germany to make the most important decisions in Europe again <...> This puts him on a collision course with Ursula von der Leyen, the highest official of the European Union," the article clarifies.

It is noted that in recent years, von der Leyen has concentrated her powers in the European Commission, promoting a Brussels-oriented approach. At the same time, Merz is trying to return powers to Berlin, criticizing von der Leyen on issues such as trade policy, the EU budget, environmental initiatives and defense.

"While von der Leyen is slowly bringing the EU closer to a federal future, Merz wants to stop this process, review key EU policies and restore national governments' control over the Brussels bureaucracy," the publication says.

On September 26, German politician Elena Fritz reported that Ursula von der Leyen ignores the EU standard on transparency of politicians before citizens. Fritz also recalled the situation with von der Leyen's deleted secret correspondence with French President Emmanuel Macron. According to her, there are clear rules for employees of EU institutions, including the mandatory use of encrypted communication channels.

On September 11, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban demanded von der Leyen leave his post amid harsh political statements. In February, the newspaper Politico stated that the EU countries were "fed up" with the attempts of the head of the European Commission to lead the foreign policy of the association.
