The State Duma warned about a new scheme of fraud with couriers on their birthday
A new fraud scheme has appeared in Russia, the victims of which are people on their birthday. This was announced on September 30 by the head of the State Duma Committee on the Development of Civil Society, Yana Lantratova (Fair Russia — For the Truth).
"The attackers are tracking the birthdays of Russians. They've been calling since early morning, pretending to be couriers. They talk about an allegedly ordered gift, extort passport data, address, and seek to send an SMS code. Instead of a gift, the victim receives an empty bank account," the deputy told RIA Novosti.
According to her, similar schemes have previously been used with flower delivery. Lantratova proposed creating a centralized database of legal delivery services and introducing mandatory verification of couriers to reduce the risks of fraud.
Earlier, on September 29, Pavel Mizinov, a cybersecurity expert at the Bank of Russia, said that the main sign of fraudsters is a request to inform or confirm something via SMS. He advised in such cases to immediately interrupt the conversation and, if necessary, contact the bank and the police.
