Narcologist Vasily Shurov said that those who died in the Leningrad region from poisoning with surrogate alcohol had no chance.

In conversation with aif.ru On September 28, the expert noted that the sale of surrogate alcohol at an extremely low price actually turns into a threat to life. According to him, given the scale and volume, we are not talking about moonshine, but, most likely, about dilute methanol or technical hydrolysis alcohol with a high content of methanol. The danger lies in the fact that such a substitute is practically indistinguishable from ethanol in taste, smell and effect.

The narcologist stressed that it is possible to identify a fake only by the consequences. Usually, after 6-8 hours, formaldehyde accumulates in the body: first, vision deteriorates, then seizures appear and coordination of movements is disrupted, after which a person may fall into a coma and die. At the same time, as the specialist noted, everything often happens against the background of severe intoxication, and others do not attach proper importance to the symptoms.

Shurov also added that in the case of moonshine, the low quality of the product is easier to determine by the smell and cloudy appearance of the liquid. However, even such signs do not always stop people: many continue to use surrogates and any alcohol-containing liquids, which, according to him, is typical for marginalized groups.

A massive case of alcohol poisoning in the Slantsevsky district of the Leningrad region became known on September 26. 78-year-old Nikolai Boytsov and 60-year-old Olga Stepanova were detained on this fact. In Boytsov's apartment, law enforcement officers found empty glass bottles and plastic cans with a volume of up to 10 liters with a characteristic odor of alcohol-containing liquid.

A criminal case was opened under Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Causing death by negligence"). Deaths were reported in several districts of the Leningrad region. Most of the victims — 22 people — were in the Slantsevsky district. Seven people were killed in the Volosovsky district, and two in the Priozersky district. One death was recorded in Gatchina and Tosnensky districts. Life.ru .

On September 29, Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian leader, called the tragedy with surrogate alcohol in the Leningrad region "out of the ordinary," the NSN reports. According to him, Russia has "very strict" laws governing alcohol trafficking, Moscow 24 notes. He stressed that such incidents are unacceptable, the website writes. kp.ru .

According to the latest data, the number of victims of counterfeit alcohol in the Leningrad region has reached 33 people, RIAMO clarifies.

Also on September 29, the Investigative Committee of Russia announced the detention of three more defendants in the case of mass poisoning with surrogate alcohol in the Leningrad region. In the near future, the issue of choosing a preventive measure in the form of detention for new defendants will be resolved. 360.ru . Earlier, 14 people were detained in the Leningrad region in three criminal cases of poisoning with surrogate alcohol, writes RT.
