- The DPRK Foreign Ministry called Pyongyang's nuclear weapons the guarantor of peace on the Korean peninsula
The DPRK's strategic deterrence forces are the guarantor of peace and balance of power on the Korean peninsula. This was stated on September 29 by North Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Kim Song Kyong at the general political discussion of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
"Despite the difficult situation on the Korean peninsula, the guns are silent, peace and security are firmly guaranteed. This [is] an indisputable reality due to the fact that our state has the potential for deterrence," TASS quoted him as saying.
According to the diplomat, the DPRK's nuclear potential suppresses the desire of Pyongyang's opponents to provoke a military conflict. Kim Song Kyong added that the DPRK has indicated in the constitution the special status of the nuclear deterrent forces in order to preserve lasting peace in the region.
"The imposition of so—called denuclearization is identical to the demand to give up one's own sovereignty and right to exist," he stressed.
On September 22, North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un announced at the 13th session of the Supreme People's Assembly of the XIV convocation that the country had acquired some secret weapons that strengthened the military industry of the state. News Agency.1 on the same day, it was reported that, presumably, the DPRK's new secret weapon is the Hwasong—20 intercontinental ballistic missile.
