In the fight for it: which TV series premieres are waiting for us in October
In October, Russian TV viewers will see several expected premieres at once. The mystical thriller "One Call Bar" will be released on the KION channel, starring Danila Kozlovsky and Oksana Akinshina, CTC will present the audience's favorite Yuri Stoyanov in the comedy show Kuznetsov TV, and Start will show the first episodes of the large-scale historical canvas "Chronicles of the Russian Revolution". Izvestia tells about the most interesting TV premieres of the month.
"One Call Bar"
October 1st, KION
Investigator Andrey Morozov is looking for his wife's missing son and soon discovers that the tracks lead to the mysterious One Call bar. Getting there is not so easy: every time the bar opens in a new place. However, this does not prevent those who suffer from searching for him — and finding him: after all, only here do those who cannot accept the death of their loved ones have the opportunity to talk to them on the phone once. And although the fee for a call is frighteningly high — a round of Russian roulette — people, unable to survive their losses, are ready to do anything to feel loved ones around again.
"The One Call bar is an infrequent example of a thriller where the tension on the screen is created not by dim light and bloodstains on the walls — although that's fine here too — but by the viewers' sharp immersion in a purely philosophical issue. What is more important — the willingness to go to the end, not accepting the loss, or the ability to accept everything and move on? And how many people are really willing to pay the full price for their choice? Danila Kozlovsky is extremely organic in the role of the bartender, and Oksana Akinshina, who played one of the clients, as always, adds a generous portion of tragedy and ringing nervous tension to the plot. Fans of the genre will be interested.
"All your wishes will come true"
October 3, Netflix
A girl named Ka-yong has long refused to live by emotions and relies only on reason. Therefore, having found a magic lamp with a djinn trapped in it and awakened him from a thousand-year-old dream, she refuses to make three cherished wishes, stating that she has everything she needs, and she can easily purchase the rest. However, as the girl and the genie communicate, many things change: little by little, the ancient spirit begins to experience human feelings, and Ka-yeon realizes that what he truly desires cannot be found in a store or ordered from a delivery service...
The romantic drama in the genre of mystical fantasy was created specifically for Netflix — and this is a sufficient guarantee of quality. The casting in the series is almost perfect, and the picture is worked out to the smallest detail. Magnificent desert landscapes are appropriately shaded by oases and hero costumes appearing on the periphery in the most harmonious color scheme with sand, glass and concrete buildings are covered with a shiny magical veil, modern retail outlets are filled with absolutely magical objects — amulets, lamps, vessels with mysterious potions... The image density is such that each frame can be viewed as an artfully drawn mandala. The plot about the awakening of romantic feelings is much less surprising. However, that's what it's meant to be, fans of dramas aren't used to expecting surprises from them.
"Comeback"
October 4, Kinopoisk
Nizhny Novgorod, early 2000s. At one of the city's schools, a homeless man lives on bird rights, who does not remember who he is or where he comes from. The harmless peasant was nicknamed Compote by the children because of his love for a drink from the school cafeteria, which his compassionate cook treats him to. However, when a trio of high school friends, Yura, Oleg and Ptakha, decide to help a classmate and accidentally get into trouble, it is the Compote that pulls them out. In gratitude, the students decide to get to the bottom of his past and regain his lost life. They do not even suspect that their investigation will turn out to be extremely dangerous, and the answers to the questions they ask may put their lives at risk.
The creators took a very serious approach to recreating the atmosphere of the era. Shots from city streets will certainly evoke nostalgia, which will echo the main plot theme — the search for the past and the desire to win back the mistakes made once, having received a second chance from life. Alexander Petrov, the honored handsome man of the Russian screen, impresses with his unrecognizability and at the same time organicity: it seems that at the age of heroes-lovers, the 36-year-old actor is ready to demonstrate the versatility of his talent.
Kuznetsov TV
October 6, STS
Three generations of an ordinary Kuznetsov family live in the same city apartment: grandfather is a former defense engineer, grandmother is an artist at heart, mother Vera with four children and her third husband. The Kuznetsovs live in close quarters, and no offense, but everything changes when savvy TV personalities persuade them to become participants in a reality show about the daily life of the family. Being under the round-the-clock sight of television cameras, each of the family members begins to show character, and now conflicts are shaking the house...
Some types of life experience are enough to get only once. It seems that Russian TV viewers have already realized that watching the ordinary life of ordinary people through glass means reducing a person to the level of a chimpanzee in a zoo — and on both sides of the camera. And the generation of communal workers still does not seem to have fallen into senility and is unlikely to laugh cheerfully at the scene when the hero, leaving the bathroom, hardly breaks up in the hallway with a stranger. Children's ignorance of the word "patisson" calls into question the well-being of the Kuznetsovs. The series is saved by Yuri Stoyanov in the role of Valery Mikhalych's grandfather: as usual, he is incredibly organic on the screen, and in his monologues life sounds as it is. The exclamation: "Well, not morons, eh?" — you can think for a long time.
"Boots"
October 9th, Netflix
Cameron, a quiet, shy high school student, is constantly being targeted by his classmates. Tired of bullying, he decides to change his fate, to become a better version of himself — stronger, bolder and more determined. He believes that the best way to do this is to serve in the army and immediately after school he joins the Marines. His best friend Ray decides to support him and signs the contract too. But the army turns out to be much rougher, more complicated and more dangerous than teenagers imagined. They will have to go through a series of tests and risk themselves more than once for the sake of tempering their character and gaining the courage to face the dangers directly. But was it worth the price you had to pay?
The series was directed by Phil Abraham, who appeared in many high—profile TV projects - from "Mad Men" and "Daredevil" to "The Sopranos" and "Breaking Bad" and the master of performance, the guru of auteur cinema Silas Howard. From this director's pair, one should expect deep psychologism and a hard breakdown of patterns — the very thing for a drama about youth in boots.
"Chronicles of the Russian Revolution"
October 10, Start
Andrei Konchalovsky's 16-episode film novel covers the period from 1905 to 1924 — from the first Russian Revolution to Lenin's death and Stalin's rise to power. Based on the lives of four fictional characters who confront each other in the social cataclysms that have engulfed Russia, the director showed a large-scale canvas describing one of the most tragic and destructive periods of Russian history.
At the beginning of filming, Andrei Konchalovsky announced "national auditions" for the roles of historical figures, who make up more than half of the characters in the new multi-part film. In the end, however, the director decided to rely on professionals: Lenin was played by Evgeny Tkachuk, Nicholas II was played by Nikita Efremov, and Matilda Kshesinskaya was played by Olga Lerman, a graduate of the choreographic college. According to Konchalovsky, in the new series he tried to get away from stereotypes, not to look for the right and the guilty, but to present the participants in the revolutionary events as ordinary people with their weaknesses and mistakes. Well, at least we will see Lenin's famous burr in its historical entirety.
