UK to support Jaguar Land Rover after cyber attack
The UK government will provide Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) with a loan guarantee in the amount of 1.5 billion pounds, the funds will be used to maintain the supply chain and save jobs while the company's operations recover from a cyberattack. This is reported by Reuters.
According to the British Minister of Business and Trade, Peter Kyle, the cyberattack was "not only an attack on an iconic British brand, but also on our leading global automotive sector." A number of small JLR suppliers complained that they had at most a week left before running out of money.
JLR, owned by India's Tata Motors, owns three factories that together produce about 1,000 cars a day and provide many jobs in the Birmingham area, the UK's second largest city, and Liverpool.
JLR's production shutdown has been going on for almost a month, and many of its 33,000 employees have been forced to go into downtime. On September 29, the company's press service announced that some production stages would resume in the coming days.
It is not yet known who is responsible for the hacking. It was preceded by serious attacks on large British enterprises, including Marks & Spencer and Co-op, in both cases hackers tried to extort money, the BBC reported. The disruption of production due to the cyber incident was first reported by JLR on September 2.
Earlier, on August 27, it was reported that Land Rover introduced a special version of the Defender SUV, which was named the Churchill Edition. It is dedicated to former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his personal Land Rover Series I car. The Defender will have a circulation of 10 copies.
