The Berg Sound Film Company and the GORAD Production Center have announced the start of filming a large-scale full-length fairy tale, Varvara Krasa. The project is being implemented with the support of the National Media Group holding, the film will be distributed by NMG Film Distribution, and the digital and television distribution rights belong to Art Pictures Distribution. The theatrical release is scheduled for March 18, 2027.
The film takes place in a fairyland where King Yeremey promises the ruler of the underwater world Berendey to marry his only son Elisha to his daughter, Princess Barbara. But instead, he sends a simple blacksmith, Andrey, who unexpectedly becomes a participant in events that can change the course of entire worlds.
The game's producers are Mikhail Pogosov, Andrey Radko and Ekaterina Gordetskaya.
"Family cinema is a powerful tool for the formation of moral values, responsibility and dreams among children and adolescents. Varvara-Krasa is an important project that combines the traditions of ancient Russian culture with modern cinema through a bright, magical world. We believe that this story will inspire viewers with kindness, courage and honesty, qualities that are especially important in the upbringing of the younger generation," says Mikhail Pogosov, the film's producer.
The director's chair was taken by Anton Lanshakov, who also wrote the script for the film.
A striking feature of the project is the stellar ensemble of actors, whose roles on the screen will be embodied in unusual and magical fairy-tale images. So, the main character, Varvara, will be played by the talented actress Rinata Timerbayeva, and the role of the little inhabitant of the underwater kingdom, Echo, went to the young star Vitaly Kornienko. The main roles will also be played by Alexander Petrov, Milos Bikovic, Kirill Pletnev, Nikita Policemako, whose characters will be voiced and presented later.
The world created by screenwriter and director Anton Lanshakov unites various elements, which are revealed through diverse location shooting and thoughtful scenery. Each location highlights the magic and atmosphere of a fabulous story. The first filming block, taking place in the Moscow region, immersed the film crew in the atmosphere of an ancient Russian city, combining authentic details of everyday life with exciting action scenes.
"The scale of this project is comparable to the world's best fantasy fairy tales. An ancient Russian city built, a unique world of the Swamp Principality created from scratch, epic battles of the Khazars, Vodyanoi and Russians… All this is to be seen by the viewer on the screen. The scope and detail are amazing and create an exciting feeling of total immersion in an unusual and fascinating fairy—tale world," comments producer Andrey Radko.
"The film Varvara-Krasa will transport the viewer to a unique magical world where the values of love and courage help the characters overcome any difficulties. The viewer will not only immerse themselves in epic battles and magical adventures, but also experience important human qualities that unite generations. As in Harry Potter, our film is a separate, complete story in which the light forces win. We strive to give families the opportunity to plunge into a fairy tale together, which inspires and teaches them to believe in the power of goodness," adds Ekaterina Gordetskaya, producer of the fantasy film.
