Record number of prison releases by mistake reported in Britain
The UK authorities released a record number of prisoners by mistake between March 2024 and March 2025. This was reported on September 29 by The Sun newspaper with reference to the penitentiary service.
"The data shows that 262 people were mistakenly released in 12 months," the publication says.
According to the publication, this is the largest year-on-year increase. The article emphasizes that some prisoners were released due to bureaucratic errors, while others were included in the early release program, which was previously initiated by the Labor Party.
It is noted that as a result, thousands of prisoners were released after serving only 40% of their sentence. The British Ministry of Justice has already announced the creation of a special group to remedy the situation, added "Газета.Ru ".
Earlier, on August 25, it was reported that in order to solve the problem of overcrowded prisons, the British parliament would be offered to consider a project that would allow thousands of criminals to avoid imprisonment. According to The Times newspaper, the initiative will encourage judges not to impose a prison sentence of less than 12 months. It clarifies that offenders in most cases will be sent to perform community service.
