Magnetic storms in October 2025: daily forecast, human impact
October will please Russians with a relatively stable geomagnetic situation. According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI and the ISSF, only minor disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field are expected within 30 days. However, the situation may change dramatically, because on September 28, the most powerful solar flare in the last three months occurred. Izvestia shares the forecast of magnetic storms for October.
Magnetic storms in October 2025 — forecast
According to the press service of the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI and the ISSF, on September 28, a pulse flare of class M6.4 occurred on the Sun — it almost reached the maximum strength of class X. This event has become the largest since June 19th. On the morning of September 29, another flare of lower power was recorded, at the M3.6 level. At the same time, scientists note, the increase in solar activity is likely to continue in the following days.
Despite the increase in solar activity, the probability of occurrence of magnetic storms is still estimated as low. According to the Laboratory, the plasma ejection rate during the most powerful flare on September 29 was insufficient to overcome the gravity of the Sun, so it is highly likely that after a while it will "settle" on the surface of the star. In addition, both events occurred far from the Sun-Earth trajectory, which reduces the risk of their impact on the magnetosphere of our planet.
"The beginning of the impact on the planet, according to calculations, will be possible from tomorrow (September 30 — Ed.). Major events of the highest score X are capable of hitting the planet even from the current remote location, but their probability is still assessed as low," the Laboratory's website says.
According to the current forecast, no magnetic storms are expected in October. At the same time, minor disturbances of the magnetosphere are possible from 3 to 6, from 12 to 13 and 26 October. However, it is important to remember that the forecast may change, as the most accurate prediction of a magnetic storm can only be made within a few hours.
The effect of magnetic storms on humans
There is no consensus on whether magnetic storms affect a person's well-being. However, many people feel unwell during periods of increased geomagnetic activity. The most common symptoms include headache, fatigue, dizziness, increased blood pressure, exacerbation of chronic diseases, insomnia, and anxiety.
In an interview with Izvestia, Rustem Gayfutdinov, a neurologist and associate professor of the Department of Neurology at Kazan State Medical University, noted that the elderly and people with chronic diseases are most often confronted with a deterioration in well-being during magnetic storms. He also recommended reducing physical, mental, and emotional activity until the geomagnetic situation improves.
What to do during magnetic storms
- drink more water (at least 1.5 liters per day);
- observe the sleep and rest regime;
- avoid severe stress and overwork;
- give up flour, sweet and fatty foods, include more vegetables and fruits in the diet;
- do light exercises, walk.
Earlier, French scientists reported a change in the Earth's magnetic field.
