American leader Donald Trump is the "president of Europe" because of his influence on the European Union (EU). This was reported by the Politico newspaper on September 26.

According to the publication, during one of the meetings in the Oval Office, the US president said that the leaders of European states called him the "president of Europe," but EU officials denied this statement.

As Politico noted, this statement reflects an awkward reality — EU leaders have given their place at the head of the table to Trump. The first evidence the publication cited was that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called the president "daddy." This happened during the June summit of the bloc in The Hague. Subsequently, the EU concluded an unbalanced trade agreement with the United States, which was compared to "capitulation."

"Never since the creation of the EU has the US president exerted such a direct influence on European affairs. And never before have the leaders of the 27 EU countries shown such willingness — even desperation — to support the US president as an authoritative figure," the article says.

On September 26, the Pais newspaper reported, citing an anonymous source in Berlin, that the EU called erroneous the statement of US President Donald Trump about the possibility of Ukraine returning its old borders with the help of the integration association.
