Polyansky stated that the UN has no grounds for imposing sanctions against Iran.
The United Nations (UN) Secretariat has no reason to renew the mandates for monitoring and implementing sanctions against Tehran. This was announced on September 26 by Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations.
"I would like to emphasize that the UN Secretariat, of course, has no reason to renew the relevant mandates. Any attempts to do this will constitute a violation of Article 100 of the UN Charter," he said during a speech after the UN Security Council rejected the Russian—Chinese resolution on extending the Iran nuclear deal.
In addition, Polyansky added that attempts to restore restrictive measures would force the Russian side to reconsider its relations with the secretariat.
Earlier, on August 28, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that Eurotroika had notified the Islamic Republic of the launch of a 30-day process to restore UN sanctions against Tehran in connection with its nuclear program. According to him, Iran will respond appropriately to the relevant decision. Later, on September 19, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh said that European countries' calls for the restoration of sanctions against Iran were a strategically wrong decision and a pretext for escalation.
Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, in turn, called the decision of the Eurotroika a step towards escalation. According to him, the initiative of the European countries has no legal force.
