- The development of the industry and science was discussed at the Global Atomic Forum
At the World Atomic Week forum, Russia signed several major contracts, including agreements with Iran, Vietnam and Ethiopia.
By 2035, Russia will have to build 38 new nuclear power plant units with a total capacity of 29 GW, which is more than in the entire history of nuclear energy, international experts noted.
"It is no coincidence that there are so many foreign guests at the main plenary session of the World Atomic Week. Russia is a recognized engine of the industry, and the energy future of the entire planet largely depends on the decisions of our scientists," Kirill Solodkov, a correspondent for Izvestia, said.
At the same time, Russia is ready to share its technologies in the energy sector. Some of them are unique, for example, the creation of a closed-cycle nuclear power plant. No one in the world has come close to this yet.
"The Breakthrough project is being implemented in the city of Seversk, where we have already put into pilot operation the fuel fabrication and refabrication module, where the construction of the BREST-300 fast reactor on lead coolant is in full swing. 300 MW will be commercial electricity to the grid. Well, the next stage will be the launch of the fuel reprocessing module. And this closed jet fuel cycle will have lasting scientific and technological significance and understandable commercial meaning," said Alexey Likhachev, head of Rosatom State Corporation.
The only MOX fuel reactor on the planet, recycled waste, is already successfully operating in the Urals. Economically, according to various estimates, there are 50 years left of uranium reserves. And it's eco—friendly - you no longer have to worry about where to put spent fuel.
The global leadership of Russian nuclear scientists is so obvious that it is recognized even by unfriendly countries.
"Today, Russia is an indispensable member in the development of an international experimental reactor. It is impossible to replace the participation of the Russian Federation, at least in the short term. This is going to be a serious problem. The technologies that Russia provides are part of the project. Therefore, we need to go together," said Alan Bekule, Deputy Director General for Science of the international organization ITER.
From the rostrum of the forum, the head of the agency, Rafael Grossi, recognizes: Rosatom's new projects are amazing — we are talking about small nuclear power plants. Such mobile reactors are already being used in the icebreaking fleet, and soon the technology will be used to provide electricity to small towns. This is faster and more economical than full-fledged nuclear power plants. The first four blocks will be tested in Chukotka, and then scaled worldwide.
"Everyone is talking about small modular reactors today, everyone wants to get such a reactor. It's a great, fantastic idea. But you need to understand that there are more than 80 designs and types and variants. And in the end, how many of them will be successful in the market? Maybe there will be only eight left instead of 80, or maybe even fewer, who knows. Russia is Russia, but there is still a whole world where people need to be helped to catch up with the main process," he said.
Both developed countries and those where the reactor was seen only on textbook pages dream of entering Rosatom's orbit. The result of the forum is agreements with Ethiopia and Vietnam on the start of nuclear power plant design there. Another contract worth 25 billion was signed with Iran — a nuclear power plant will be built in the province of Hormozgan.
"Almost 120 countries, well, 118, to be precise, are represented in one form or another. Today, we have a commercial presence in more than 70 countries. I think that we will add at least 10 countries to the global map of Rosatom's presence following the results of our forum. About 50 agreements have been signed," Alexey Likhachev said.
Nuclear energy not only provides light in homes, but also serves as an incentive for the development of science and technology. Heads of corporations, ministers and academics spoke about this at the educational marathon of the Znanie Society.
"We are the first, we are one of the first and the best in the world. Engines are made by four countries in the world, four companies," said Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute Research Center.
What was created as an atomic shield has now become the foundation for scientific and economic sovereignty. Russia is not just participating in the technology race, but is setting its trajectory for years to come.
Earlier that day, Grossi called Russia a leader in the nuclear industry on the sidelines of the opening of the World Atomic Week forum. According to him, this is not a political issue, but a statement of fact.
On September 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting on the development of the fuel and energy complex of the Far East, stressed that Russia should actively develop nuclear energy, which fully complies with environmental principles.
Later, on September 25, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian peaceful atom technologies were super-competitive on the world stage. According to him, the Russian nuclear power industry also carries out a number of important international and domestic projects.
