The deployment of the Russian Oreshnik missile system on the territory of Belarus does not mean a mindless arms race, it is a purely defensive approach. This was stated on September 26 by the country's Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov at a high-level plenary meeting at the UN headquarters in New York.

"We are not getting involved in a mindless arms race, we are not provoking further confrontation. Our response is asymmetric, it is purely defensive in nature and is carried out in strict accordance with international law and the provisions of the Treaty on the Non—Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons," the BelTA news agency quoted the head of the department as saying.

Earlier, on September 25, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced the deployment of the Oreshnik complex to Belarus. He also commented on the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin to preserve the operation of the Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty (START Treaty) for another year after its expiration.
