On the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, believers remember two significant events from the history of the Orthodox Church at once — the finding of the Precious and Life-giving Cross and the return of the shrine from captivity after being captured by the Gentiles.

After the death of Christ, severe persecution of Christians began in the Roman Empire. Believers were tortured, deprived of their civil rights, and executed en masse for refusing to worship idols. Places associated with the life of the Son of God were built up with pagan temples and filled with garbage in the hope that eventually their existence would be forgotten. Many shrines, including the Tomb and the Holy Cross, were lost at that time.

At the beginning of the fourth century, Constantine the Great became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire. He stopped the persecution and made Christianity the official religion. On his initiative, several archaeological expeditions were organized to search for places and relics associated with Christ. The excavations were led by the emperor's mother, St. Helena, Equal-to-the-Apostles.

Around the year 326, Elena arrived in Jerusalem. After a long search, she managed to find out that the Cross of the Lord was buried under the temple of Venus. Three crosses, nails and a plaque with the inscription "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" were found in the indicated place. To find out which of the instruments of execution belonged to Christ, each of them was attached to the body of a recently deceased person. After touching the last Cross, the man came back to life.

After learning about the miraculous find, Christians from all over Jerusalem gathered to worship at the shrine. There were so many people that most of the believers could not even look at the Life-giving Cross. Then Patriarch Macarius stood on a hill and erected it, that is, raised it high. This event gave the name to the feast, the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, and formed the basis of the icon of the same name.

After the acquisition, one part of the Cross was left in Jerusalem, and the other was sent to Constantinople. In 614, the Persian king Khosrau II plundered Jerusalem and took the Cross. Only 14 years later, Emperor Heraclius I was able to return the shrine to its rightful place.

According to legend, the ruler wanted to personally bring the Cross to the Church of the Resurrection of Christ, but an invisible force stopped him on the threshold. Then Patriarch Zachariah ordered the emperor to take off his magnificent robes and crown, because Jesus walked his way of the cross "in a humiliated state." Only after getting rid of his royal robes could Heraclius enter the temple.

All-night vigils are held in churches on the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. At the climax of the service, a Cross is carried to the center of the temple, to the lectern.
