The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, could have a positive impact on the United Nations (UN) if he is appointed Secretary General. Alexey Likhachev, head of the Rosatom state Corporation, told Izvestia on September 26.

"It would be important to us that a person who could find a balance in such a complex structure would have a positive impact on the main international forum of the planet," he said on the sidelines of the Global Atomic Forum.

According to Likhachev, the UN has not coped with the challenges of our time and has not been able to survive "the intensity of passions" to which the world has come this year. He added that if Grossi did not abandon the idea of running for the post of secretary general of the organization, it means that later "there will be something interesting."

The day before, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with the head of the IAEA. According to the Kremlin's press service, Putin and Grossi, who are taking part in the Global Atomic Forum as part of World Atomic Week, visited the Atom Museum, where a guided tour was conducted by Likhachev.

Putin said during the meeting that cooperation between the Russian Federation and the IAEA has been established in almost all areas. In addition, on September 25, Putin and President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko welcomed Grossi's willingness to nominate his candidacy for the post of UN Secretary General.
