- Likhachev pointed to the escalation of attacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the nuclear power plant and Energodar
The situation with attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) on the territories adjacent to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and its satellite city of Energodar has now escalated. This was announced on September 26 by Alexey Likhachev, head of the Rosatom State Corporation, at a press conference within the framework of the World Atomic Week.
"It is obvious that over the past few weeks the situation has worsened with attacks on the territories adjacent to the station. One of the attacks destroyed the power supply network. And from the point of view of strikes on the Energy Sector, the city of nuclear scientists is canonically considered part of the nuclear infrastructure and directly affects the safety of the nuclear power plant," Likhachev said.
At the same time, at the Zaporizhia NPP itself, which survived the most massive attack by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, everything is under control. The day before, this situation was discussed in detail by the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Everything is under control at the NPP. <...> The entire generator system turned on on time, there are enough fuel reserves, <...> and we are supplementing the necessary reserves. From the point of view of organizational security, the situation is under absolute control," Likhachev said.
In an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin, Likhachev also noted that the geography of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' provocations against Russian nuclear facilities has expanded in recent weeks. At the same time, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, knows where the strikes are coming from. On the same day, Grossi told Izvestia that the situation at the nuclear power plant needed to be stabilized amid ongoing attacks by Ukrainian militants. He called the current situation fragile.
On September 2, the NPP was disconnected from the last external power supply line that supplied it. It was later reported that this happened as a result of an APU strike. The station is powered by backup diesel generators to ensure safety. The next day, on September 24, Evgenia Yashina, Director of Communications at the NPP, reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces began shelling the area of the NPP and the satellite city of Energodar on a daily basis.
